The city of Alanya is part of the Antalya province on the southwestern mediterranean coast of Turkey. It is a popular destination for tourists with its turquoise waters, warm weather, and many resorts. A strategic location on the sea, the city has been under the rule of many different civilizations, including, at one time, Mediterranean pirates. Remnants of Alanya’s ancient history are scattered throughout the city.

A must-see is the Alanya castle, which is situated in the middle of the city’s coastline on top of a large hill. From the top are breathtaking views of craggy cliffs stretching down to the Mediterranean below on one side and the Taurus mountains to the north of the city on the other. You can board a boat made to look like an old pirate ship for a tour of the coastline from the water. From time to time the boat stops and the passengers can jump out for a swim. Old caves accessible only from the water make this particular outing appealing.

Other fun things to do in Alanya include eating fresh fish or drinking tea at floating restaurants along the nearby Dim Çayı (deem chay) river that flows from the mountains into the sea. Visitors can also relax on Cleopatra Beach, so named because of the princess’ visit here, marvel at stalactites in centuries’ old caves, and of course swim in the beautiful blue mediterranean waters.
